However aside from the eleven we know and the countless others Christ Jesus showed himself to after the resurrection, we see another example in Paul. He saw Christ and was ordained to be an apostle well after, Would it be strange to believe that something like this would occur throughout all generations until the return. I am no Biblical powerhouse, but this seems to me a more than reasonable thought. A number of the authors represented here are experts in the history of Judaism and of Jewish art, but few real Jews people the pages of this volume: Jews who breathed air and lived history, as opposed to Jews as imagined by Christians and represented in Christian art. Occasionally we do find living Jews intervening in this work, as in the fifteenth-century case of Rabbi Moses Arragel, whose attempts to shape the program of the Alba Bible's Christian illuminators Marcia Kupfer discusses in Chapter 5. But the cultures, artists, and objects we are studying are primarily Christian because our focus is on the work that figures of Judaism do in Christian art, and on the ways in which that art deployed the perils and possibilities of Judaism in order to explore the perils and possibilities of its own practice. Representational in content, the art is stylistically diverse and the range of subjects wide, encompassing peaceful landscapes and pictures of Christ; however, uniting the entire Christian art field is the hopeful and uplifting theme of the imagery. A pioneer in this market is the California painter Thomas Kinkade, whose paintings of rural and small-town life (sold primarily as giclee prints through galleries and the artist’s website) “taught dealers that they could sell Christian art for a high price,” said Stephanie Allen, executive vice-president of Somerset Fine Art in Fulshear, Texas, a print publisher whose “Christian” art is one of 16 categories of artwork produced and distributed to galleries around the United States. Kinkade’s images are not overtly Christian, she noted, but he built his brand around being an artist with a strong set of Christian values. inspiring quote $9.25 Sierra Metal Design | Powered by Shopify | Designed by WeTheme But I also realize that it is only God that allows this to happen and that my first response must always be to pray to Him and ask Him if there might be something He is trying to reveal to me, a person to pray for, a situation to pray for, someone to share Christ with, etc. The list can go on. I’ve found that when I have felt or seen something NOT of God and ask Him that if it is not Him revealing something for me and there is NO REASON for it to be there that He would please take it away He usually does. Some “faith healers” claim to have this gift yet have often been exposed to be frauds by undercover reporters. Many of those “healed” have been interviewed prior to their supposed healing. Some tap the power of positive thinking to convince them that they are healed. Others have even used “scam artists” or actors to portray someone that has been healed from an infirmity that they never actually had. This gift was more prominent in the New Testament church to confirm that Jesus Christ’s name had power and that God was working in the church. I am not saying that people are still not healed today but the days of having someone’s shadow passing over them and they are instantly healed is over. The gift of healing may be in relations to the power of prayer and we know that the effectual prayer of a righteous man or woman can accomplish miracles (James 5:16). In any event, we must attribute any healing that is done is “…by that one Spirit“ and not by humans (v 9). Oil Paintings Christian Art and Architecture is a general category for artworks and buildings produced for religious purposes, primarily the veneration of Christ and his teachings, the Virgin Mary, and the saints. As the ideas and practices of Christianity have changed and developed over the past nearly two thousand years, so too has the artistic expression surrounding it. Early Christian art developed from the fourth to sixth centuries to address the demands of a growing Christian population. Its formation was marked by the construction of the original basilica of Saint Peter in Rome between 324 and 329 CE. Over a millennium later, this site of pilgrimage was rebuilt to reflect the growing power of the papacy, who commissioned the design from Renaissance and Baroque masterminds like Donato Bramante, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Perhaps art history’s most enduring patron, the Church has also sponsored works by modern artists and architects, from Auguste Rodin to Le Corbusier, that continue to demonstrate the variety of styles and iconographies that have developed during Christianity’s long history. I don’t believe that one who does not “speak in tongues” is not indwelt by the Holy Spirit which we all receive when we are born again. I also don’t believe the tongues described in Acts chapter 2 and the tongues spoken of in 1st Cor. 12-14. You say that Paul was reproving the Corinthian church for using tongues in a pagan way. The scriptures do not say this. I believe Paul was telling them this and all other gifts were to be used for the edifying of the church and if others could not understand what was being said it would not edify them. Or if an unbeliever would come into a meeting with several people speaking in tongues they would think the church was a bunch of lunatics. Paul says that whoever speaks in an unknown tongue should pray for the interpretation of it so the church could be edified. Tongues described in 1stCor. Is a gift where believer can pray to God “spirit to Spirit” 1Cor. 14:14-15. I do not believe these tongues were meant to be understood by the human mind.
