Bar & Grill Gifts Topic Index Thematic Bible Classic Bible Verses for Christmas Cards RADIO/TV CLICK HERE Matthew’s Gospel tells us that, at the moment Christ died, darkness swept over the land for three hours (Matthew 27:45). The foreboding skies at Christ’s crucifixion were also recorded in Luke 23:44-45 and Mark 15:33. Mark’s account, thought to have been written around the year 70 CE, was likely the earliest. Some scholars have reasoned that this midday phenomenon was an actual eclipse, because the passage in Luke reports that darkness fell over the land when “the sun was eclipsed” (“τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος”) (Luke 23:45). However, the passage is usually translated “the sun was darkened.” The verb is in the passive voice, as is the verb “ἐσκοτίσθη” used in other versions of the Greek text, and both words can mean “was darkened” or “was obscured.” No matter how we may interpret the words relating the phenomenon, and no matter whether it is possible to attribute the darkness thus described to a real astronomical event, scriptural hours of daytime darkness over Golgotha presented an iconographic opportunity to medieval artists depicting the Crucifixion.

He really began to assert his independence covered by ‘transparent’ LYING after our first child was born and his mom died. He had a brief emotional adulterous relationship with a woman at work that I discovered and I took action to go to her and relate to her that God’s best man for any woman would not be another woman’s wife. I ministered and prayed with her …she then called me to apologize and quit her job and left town …I was not until just lately I found out that she was a married woman ! SO my husband has never been transparent and still is not being so . He simply does not have the ‘skills’ to call upon himself to be truthful .

orange Kessler's "Shaded with Dust" is a lapidary history of this deployment in the early and high Middle Ages. It provides, together with Sara Lipton's "Unfeigned Witness" (Chapter 2), the foundations for this temporal cluster, setting the artifacts of emerging eleventh- and twelfth-century visual culture within the context of theological debates about the "Jewish" dangers of vision and of media. Lipton's essay elaborates one of the deepest piers in this foundation, demonstrating how the Augustinian doctrine of the Jews as blind witnesses to Christian truth was, in the twelfth century, put to the work of authenticating textual and material representations of Christian sanctity. The Jewish witness in the life of Saint Heribertus and the Hebrew prophets standing on the twelfth-century Eilbertus Altar both emerge as defenders of the artifact, protecting the work from the charge of "fiction" with which Christian critics of art could reproach it.

Mexico Witness Cards But when that redeemer came, most of Israel rejected him. It did so, according to Paul, because of its own errors of perception and cognition. It saw only the outside of God's gifts—their literal, carnal, and ceremonial significance—rather than their inner or spiritual meaning. It understood only the letter of God's scripture, only the humanity of God's son. "To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the spirit is life and peace" (8:6). Because of this slavery to the flesh and to its senses, the bulk of Israel was cut off from God's vine, making room for the in-grafting of the gentiles. Outcast Israel did retain the honor of having received the promise ("As regards the gospel they are enemies of God for your sake; but as regards election they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers," 11:28). She was not condemned forever. At the end of time "all Israel will be saved," and her reconciliation will bring "life for the dead" (Rom. 11). But in the meantime, the Israelites who reject Jesus have yet another aesthetic role to play. They are "vessels of wrath made for destruction, in order to make known the riches of his glory for the vessels of mercy" (9:22-23). Their "blind eyes" and bent backs serve as a lesson to gentile Christians (like those among the Romans and the Galatians), a warning not to repeat their ocular error of seeing only the letter of the law, the outer flesh rather than the inner spirit. Already here, in this text from the first generation after the death of Jesus, the Jews are becoming media, exemplary artifacts through which God's teachings about vision becomes visible and the Christian eye learns how to see.

So-called Northern Renaissance art (c.1430-1580) was dominated by the school of Flemish Painting, part of the broader movement of the Netherlandish Renaissance. In simple terms, the Northern Renaissance started with a bang, rapidly establishing itself as the foremost school of oil painting, and thereafter gradually declined. The altarpiece art of painters like Jan van Eyck (see his Ghent Altarpiece, 1432) and Roger van der Weyden (Descent from the Cross, 1440), as well as the unbelievably intricate works of Hugo van der Goes (Portinari Altarpiece, 1475), were rarely equalled, except by the extraordinary visionary pictures of Hieronymus Bosch - see Garden of Earthly Delights and Haywain Triptych - (avidly collected by the austere Catholic monarch Philip II of Spain), and the complex genre paintings of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Census of Bethlehem, 1566; Massacre of the Innocents, 1564; Parable of the Blind, 1568).
