The most likely interpretation of the controversial passage concerning the silence of women in 1 Corinthians 14:33b–35 is that women may prophesy (see Acts 2:17–18; 21:9; 1 Cor. 11:5) but may not publicly judge the prophetic words of men in the congregation. Prophets were always to be in control of their speech (1 Cor. 14:32) as an expression of God’s desire for peace (1 Cor. 14:33). And as important as this ministry is in the body of Christ, even those claiming to be prophets must be subject to the final authority of the apostles (1 Cor. 14:36–38). During the Early Christian period, Roman art forms were harnessed for Christian purposes. Early Christian visual art embodies a transition away from realism to stylization, given the focus of Christian artists on conveying spiritual ideas (namely biblical figures and events) rather than physical accuracy (see Realism vs. Stylization).1 Early Christian art thus served as the transitional phase from Roman art to medieval art, the latter of which is highly stylized. Column statues and reliefs of figures from the Old Testament, as well as depictions of Christ and other members of the Holy Family, were commonplace. Gothic sculpture developed in a series of small creative steps. First came an increased realism, visibly different from the rather wooden look of the Romanesque idiom; then we see more graceful figures with soft drapery; then figures with a solid, upright appearance, with more restrained gestures. Finally came figures with dainty postures and thick drapery hanging in long V-shaped folds. Among the greatest sculptors were Nicola Pisano (c.1206-1278) and Arnolfo di Cambio (c.1240–1310). We painted all kinds of Christian symbols, including images of Christ as the Good Shepherd, a praying figure called the orant, the Chi-Rho, which is a special type of cross made from the first two letters of Christ's name, grapes and wheat for the Eucharist, doves for peace, the fish, which stands for Jesus, and the anchor, which signifies stability and hope for eternity. We also painted scenes from the Old Testament and from Jesus's life. These frescoes always inspired us, helped us grow in our faith, and drew our minds up to spiritual realities. Beads & Jewelry The School of Athens, c.1511 (detail) (88) Girls Conference My friendship with him dissolved soon thereafter. I no longer felt like this was a teaching I could follow — the Holy Spirit led me away from it. Over the years, I continued to ask questions from time to time of people who I considered filled with the Spirit of God. Time and again, I would receive confirmation that tongues was an edification for the person, not God, and served no valid purpose in the way it is practiced by various Pentecostal and Charismatic churches. I also would encounter those that spoke in tongues. I would usually not react adversely in any way or judge that person, but I still did not feel at peace with it. Now, let me clarify that with the statement that I believe if God the Spirit DID have a purpose that glorified Him and not the speaker, absolutely, He could bestow such a gift upon him — as He WILLS and for His glory. Are there people that speak in tongues today? I’m sure there are. Does the language always come from God? Hmmm, now that’s a good question and one that is between God and the person doing the speaking. Create Your Own Products Christianity Today: Dream, Believe, Achieve Sentiment Bracelet Serve the Lord with Joy - Botanical Framed Wall Art With the fall of Rome and the disintegration of the Roman Empire, Western Europe entered the Dark Ages (400-800), a period of political uncertainty and cultural stagnation. The only possible unifying force was Christianity, but with Rome sacked and the Roman Church under pressure, its influence was limited. Only in Ireland, a country cut off from the European mainland, did Christianity flourish. In fact, Irish Monastic art and culture was critical in keeping alive the ideas of classical antiquity, as well as the message of the Bible. Early Medieval art in Ireland was dominated by the making of illuminated manuscripts, notably the Cathach of St. Columba (c.610), the Book of Durrow (c.650-80), the Lichfield Gospels (c.730), the Echternach Gospels (690-715), the Lindisfarne Gospels (698) and the stunning Book of Kells (800). Because of the country's ongoing tradition of Celtic art, most Irish manuscript illustrators used abstract Celtic designs, rather than figurative imagery preferred by Continental artists. They come from Satan and the only way a Christian would hear or see these thing would be if it were a form of attack, not a gift. From experience, Spiritual attacks are scary stuff and not a gift at all! These things usually happen to discourage the believer from following the faith and lead them astray…from the path God wishes for them. I have known them to occur people who have been involved in things of the occult and they were attacked as they found their faith. Satan didn’t want them to go to God! Other times, Ministers and those who are currently being used by God for something, have been attacked spiritually in such ways. However Spiritual attack can come in many forms, not just the supernatural scary stuff. In my case, as I learn how to repel one type of attack, Satan hits me the next time with something stronger and unfamilar. He is not very nice as I am sure you know and will try anything to keep us from full filling Gods plan. Christian-art-sample

Manifold and various are the graces of the Spirit of God, and the rich experiences communicated to men, which are not only for themselves, but for the good of others also: gifts for public usefulness are different one from another; one man has one gift, and another has another; or the same gift is not alike in all, in some greater, and in others less; and all are but stewards: they are accountable for them, and the use of them, to their great Lord and master: and various are the doctrines of the grace of God; of the grace of the Father in election, in the everlasting covenant, in the mission of his Son, in the free justification of sinners by his righteousness, in the free and full pardon of all their sins, in the adoption of any into his family, and in the gift of eternal life; and of the Son of God, in engaging as the surety of his people from everlasting, in assuming their nature in time, in obeying, suffering, and dying in their room and stead; and of the Spirit of God in regeneration and sanctification; and of all these mysteries of grace the ministers of the Gospel are stewards; and it is required of them that they be faithful. Temporal good things are given to men, not for their own use only, but for others; and they are but stewards of them; the original proprietor is God, and to him they must give an account of their stewardship, and how they have used and disposed of the manifold gifts which God of his goodness has put into their hands; so that this last clause contains a reason or argument enforcing the above rule. Christians want to enjoy good art as much as anyone; and if they can’t get it in the niche Christian market, there’s always the secular market to fill the gap.
