Christian tradition remembers Peter as a close follower of Jesus, an authoritative if flawed leader, and an active missionary who founded communities before suffering martyrdom. Certain fixed days are always fast days, even if they fall on a Saturday or Sunday (in which case the fast is lessened somewhat, but not abrogated altogether); these are: The Decollation of St. John the Baptist, the Exaltation of the Cross and the day before the Epiphany (January 5). There are several fast-free periods, when it is forbidden to fast, even on Wednesday and Friday. These are: the week following Pascha, the week following Pentecost, the period from the Nativity of Christ until January the 5th and the first week of the Triodion (the week following the 17th Sunday before Pentecost). Crowned by a massive dome whose weight was carried to corner piers by revolutionary concave triangular sections of stone, called pendentives, and decorated throughout with gold mosaics and multicoloured marble, the Hagia Sophia was the culmination of Roman architecture and a huge inspiration for later buildings throughout the Middle East, including the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. The mention of the Nativity of our Lady on 9 September instead of 8 September is interesting in view of the Eastern practice, attested by the Naples marble calendar, of celebrating the Conception of Our Lady on 9 December. The appearance of St. Januarius (19 September) is also noteworthy. The link between England and Southern Italy in the matter of the commemoration of saints has often been noticed without ever being quite adequately explained. (See Morin, Liber Comicus, Appendix, etc.) The occurrence of the Invention of the Cross on 7 May, as in the Greek Church, is also remarkable. It is further curious to note the partial erasure of the Assumption feast on 16 August (sic), and its appearance upon 18 January. The later Anglo-Saxon calendars, of which a fair number have been printed by Hampson and Piper, offer fewer points of interest than the above; but a word should be said of one or two which are especially noteworthy. The metrical Latin calendar printed among the works of Bede is shown not to be his by the reference to the second Wilfrid of York, who died after his time, but it offers some useful points of comparison with Bede's genuine martyrologium, which, thanks to the patient labour of Dom Quentin, has at last been recovered for us (see Les Martyrologes Historiques, Paris, 1908, pp. 17-119). Not less interesting is the ancient English martyrology edited for the Early English Text Society by G. Herzfeld. This document, though not a calendar, and though including later interpolations, probably reflects the arrangement of a calendar which may be even older than the time of Bede. It is especially noteworthy for brief references to certain Capuan and South Italian saints, which it professes to derive from the "old Mass Books", probably missals of that Gelasian type for which the Gregorian Sacramentary was afterwards substituted. Lauren Daigle This ‘ignorance’ is not always for lack of trying but at least for me I have observed in my own walk that we don’t realize what we don’t have that we need of the understanding of what GOD has recorded for us to learn and know. About Our Church 21 Matthew, Apostle While Rush includes 252 images in his DVD (or is it a CD? idk), he mentions many other images in his book which he doesn't seem to have had permission to reproduce. Many other authors have a handful of images they use in their books, but Rush far exceeds them. He has more images of the "mushroom tree" as art-historians call it than all other authors combined. I can't imagine anybody ever catching up to him. Through is perseverance, Rush has made himself an essential invitee to the round-table on Myco-Mythology. You simply cannot have the conversation without him anymore. I think that over time he will become a better author and I hope that he edits "The Mushroom in Christian Art" to continue refining what seems to be his Opus. Many authors have done this with their own Opus, and Rush would be doing us a service in situ. I can't help but wonder if his editor at North Atlantic Books and his agent (surely he has one) didn't do him a disservice by letting this book go to print in such a haphazard way. Nonetheless I give the book 4 stars simply for his collection of images alone.
