2. Kells, Market Cross 11 Then the Holy Spirit told me that I first had to love God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Then God would impart to me the grace that would enable me to love my wife in this manner. The Holy Spirit went on to teach me whenever I would see something that would cause me to find fault in my wife, I should first pray for Him to help me get the logs out of my eyes, so I could see clearly, through God’s eyes of loving kindness, tender mercies, and forgiveness. Only through this would I be able to see clearly to remove specks, if any from my wife’s eyes. He taught me to pray for God to set a guard over my mouth, and keep watch over the door of my lips (Psalm 141:3). He showed me that this would keep me from saying anything that hurt my wife and her walk with God. Then I was able to always speak words of encouragement to my wife even when I had to correct her about something to let her know that God was greater than anything she did wrong and could help her with any problems in her life as a Christian. This has been a beautiful experience for me as a Christian man. The Good Shepherd motif certainly calls to mind the Gospel parables of the lost sheep (Luke 15) and of the shepherd who gives his life for his sheep (John 10). Also the shepherd plays an important role in the Old Testament book of Psalms. But the shepherd was also popular as an allegorical figure in classical art and culture. It is significant to note that the style of this painting with its loose impressionistic style and suggestion of landscape space echoes a category of ancient painting called sacral-idyllic landscapes: Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. St. Cyril of Jerusalem says,  But why did Christ call the grace of the Spirit water? Because all things are dependent on water; plants and animals have their origin in water. Water comes down from heaven as rain, and although it is always the same in itself, it produces many different effects, one in the palm tree, another in the vine, and so on throughout the whole of creation. It does not come down, now as one thing, now as another, but while remaining essentially the same, it adapts itself to the needs of every creature that receives it. In the same way the Holy Spirit, whose nature is always the same, simple and indivisible, apportions grace to each man as he wills. Like a dry tree which puts forth shoots when watered, the soul bears the fruit of holiness when repentance has made it worthy of receiving the Holy Spirit. Although the Spirit never changes, the effects of this action, by the will of God and in the name of Christ, are both many and marvelous. The Spirit makes one man a teacher of divine truth, inspires another to prophesy, gives another the power of casting out devils, enables another to interpret holy Scripture. The Spirit strengthens one man’s self-control, shows another how to help the poor, teaches another to fast and lead a life of asceticism, makes another oblivious to the needs of the body, trains another for martyrdom. His action is different in different people, but the Spirit himself is always the same. In each person, Scripture says, the Spirit reveals his presence in a particular way for the common good. (Cat. 16, De Spiritu Sancto 1, 11-12.16: PG 33, 931-935. 939-942) Genesis 21:1-2 “Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.” List of Illustrations The Cross pictured to the right is the Scripture Cross at Clonmacnois, County Offaly.  The photo is from Peter Harbison, 1992, Volume 2. Holy Book Scripture... $0.72 each! Calendar reform New Daily Content So God created humans to be like himself; he made men and women. Two main versions of the Christian calendar have existed in recent times: The Julian calendar and the Gregorian calendar. The difference between them lies in the way they approximate the length of the tropical year and their rules for calculating Easter. But the Julian and Gregorian calendars inherited a lot of their structure from the ancient Roman calendar. Therefore a study of that calendar is also relevant here. The Gifts Table By the middle of the 18th century, Catholic countries were becoming overstocked with cathedrals, churches, abbeys, monasteries and convents - in the case of certain cities like Naples, almost absurdly so. As a result, ecclesiastical commissions began to dry up. At the same time, with the advent of the 18th century Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution and political upheavals like the French Revolution of 1789, the European Christian Church lost ground to nationalism, socialism and other value systems. What's more, it raised less money to spend on religious statues or other forms of church art. By the 19th century, the Church was less important as a patron of the arts than kings and noblemen, while the middle class demand for portraits, topographical landscapes and other secular works, was increasing rapidly. Painters could enjoy a prosperous career simply by focusing on portrait art, or various types of landscape painting, without ever painting a religious subject - something hitherto unknown in Catholic countries, though long regarded as normal in Protestant ones. Such a beautiful testimony! This truly blessed my soul on today. God bless you. A different comic vein is visible in the representation of Rebekah complaining to Isaac about Esau’s Hittite wives: she looks altogether like a rasping Jewish mother objecting to the shiksas with whom her son has taken up. Among other engaging visual elaborations one might note Laban, waving a juicy chunk of meat as he bargains with Jacob; Leah’s little sons squabbling with one another as she holds Dinah, whose birth has just been reported in the narrative; and Jacob exerting terrific effort to roll the stone from the mouth of the well and to push different stones into place as commemorative markers; and Potiphar, having "left all that he had in Joseph’s hands," lying on a couch, feasting, while he takes in a performance of Egypt’s finest topless dancers. In a particularly delightful bit of whimsy, Manasseh, Joseph’s firstborn son, is shown as a naked cavorting toddler, with a little toy Egyptian chariot at his feet. He told me that the love of God shed abroad in my in is a love from God and a love for God. He told me to keep that love alive and active what I had to do was declare that love every day all during the day. Then He told me to go to Proverbs 18:19-20 showing that I can awaken that love by speaking life to it. He went on to tell me even if I don’t feel like I love God, just to declare it anyway and my love for Him will remain alive in me. Birthday Create-A-Card Artists were commissioned more secular genres like portraits, landscape paintings and because of the revival of Neoplatonism, subjects from classical mythology. In Catholic countries, production continued, and increased during the Counter-Reformation, but Catholic art was brought under much tighter control by the church hierarchy than had been the case before. From the 18th century the number of religious works produced by leading artists declined sharply, though important commissions were still placed, and some artists continued to produce large bodies of religious art on their own initiative.
