Iron & Glass Hi Jerry…Okay if I am not misunderstanding what you are asking, wanting to know why so many Christians are against the modern practice of tongue while they easily accept the other gifts of the spirit, the simplest answer is that the time for tongues as a gift benefiting the church has past with pentecost. As Pastor Jack said many time before, this was a signs gift given to glorify God and prove Christ deity! Just like so many big in your face miracles like the feeding of the loaves and fish. These things proved to the Jews and the gentiles that Christ was the son of God. It was also necessary for the spreading of the word and the formation of the new church. This is why it was never to be used in public without an interpreter…It was so that foreigners could understand what was being preached and to provide prophesy. The reason we do not practice it today is because it is simply not needed in the modern church. The time of prophesy has ended and we are in the time of the fulfillment of prophesy for the coming of the end times. We can preach in any language needed either because we have ministers of all nationalities and in most every country, or we can use interpreters. Miracles do still happen and so they are still a valid church gift of the Spirit but even those have changed…We have miracles happen all around us if we open our eyes and accept God, we can see them. However we no longer need the parting of seas,etc. We don’t need big signs to say see God is real…believe! The bible tells us that once the church was established and Christ had returned to his father, we are to believe by faith, not signs. When big churches tell people they must speak in tongues to show salvation, that is not biblical teaching. Also the fact they have no interpreters is not biblical. Finally the fact that many times they are in a frenzy and babbling in no actual language is not biblical, not of God, and sometimes possibly of the enemy not God! God is never the Lord of confusion! With that said, the bible says if it is done in private ( such as in your own Prayer life), because it can not be translated, it is to remain between you and God! I won’t say it could not happen in private but than that makes it a personnel experience and therefore not a gift of the Spirit…Gift of the spirit are not for personnel edification! So as long as this is not happening in church without proper interpretation, than that is between you and God. The other gift that are not signs gifts are still in use/effect today because they have a place in the edification of the whole church. I am sure that if you have tongues as a private gift, you still have one or two more gifts that fall into the catagory of Gifts of the Spirit which are still needed and used validly within the church today! However, the most important gift should be seen within all believers and that is thee most important Fruit of the Spirit…Charity/Love…That which we are all to be known by!

A temple is a sort of container and if our bodies are the containers, so to speak, of the Holy Spirit, then it makes sense to say that our bodies also contain our souls.

The earlier form reads Matthew's account on Sunday, Mark's on Tuesday, and Luke's on Wednesday, while the post-1969 form reads the Passion only on Palm Sunday (with the three Synoptic Gospels arranged in a three-year cycle) and on Good Friday, when it reads the Passion according to John, as also do earlier forms of the Roman Rite.

And we might add—although he does not claim it—that in the process he has also discovered a strategy by which the illuminations themselves resist the reduction of the image to bare matter and bare mimesis. Felipe Pereda's "Through a Glass Darkly: Paths to Salvation in Spanish Painting at the Outset of the Inquisition" (Chapter 9) presents us with a case from the same kingdom—Castile—some two centuries later, at a time when the conversion of tens of thousands of Jews to Christianity had fractured consensus about the "Christianity" of art. Pereda provides an illuminating case study of how a Christian culture refashioned its converts into the "Jewish" cohorts it needed to defend Christian art. Stephen Campbell (Chapter 10) addresses a fear of "Judaism" provoked not by old Jews or new converts, but by new "realist" styles of painting. Focusing on a group of mid-sixteenth-century Brescian painters that included Moretto—who explored Old Testament themes like the sacrifice of Isaac in order to differentiate his "sacred naturalism" from rival forms of realism that he associated with carnality, mimesis, and excessive mediation—he offers us a powerful example of how readily pictorial realism was assimilable in Christian thought to "Jewish" emphasis on material form rather than spiritual truth. Finally, at the very end of our Medieval and Renaissance cluster, the illegible Hebrew script that Poussin's Jesus writes in the dust of "The Woman Caught in Adultery" becomes for Richard Neer (Chapter 11) the founding charter of Christian history painting. It is in these letters, writes Neer, that Poussin "think[s] history painting's grounding laws of space, time, and legibility, laws that Poussin states precisely in order to transcend them in his figural juxtapositions."

Crumb, and there are moments in his illustrated Genesis when one is not entirely sure whether this wildness has the effect of drolly playing with the text or of running at cross-purposes with it. For the verse "Hence a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and they become one flesh," Crumb shows a naked Adam and Eve frolicking together in the grass, but with bared teeth and popping eyes that would seem to express something closer to craziness than to erotic rapture. This is, of course, one of Crumb’s trademark looks, and its appearance here may reflect the limitations of his emotional means. When Abraham entering Egypt says, "I know that my wife is beautiful to behold," the image of the heavy-set and coarse-featured Sarah may make us think twice about the accuracy of this judgment, though of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I would guess that the graphic image might actually correspond to the artist’s feminine ideal.
